Heal the Family, Heal the World
Because we learn at a very early age how to be accepted in this world, we are sometimes burdened with rules and behaviors that inhibit our ability to live and practice our freedoms as adults. The Satir Growth Model believes that it is important to re-visit family of origin dynamics to clarify the misperceptions we carry from our childhood. Using experiential tools, past family-of-origin rules and behaviors are transformed to allow access to our five freedoms.
The Five Freedoms
The freedom to see and hear what is here instead of what should be, was, or will be.
The freedom to say what one feels and thinks instead of what one should.
The freedom to feel what one feels, instead of what one ought to.
The freedom to ask what one wants, instead of always waiting for permission.
The freedom to take risks on one’s own behalf, instead of choosing to be only secure instead of not rocking the boat.
What is the Satir Growth Model?
Virginia’s belief in the innate capability for growth and change in every individual and system is the cornerstone of her model. It advocates for congruence—authenticity in thoughts, emotions, and actions—and outlines the Five Freedoms as a framework for personal and relational harmony. Her approach, validated by modern neuroscience, remains a global influence in therapy and healing practices. Her methods support practitioners in guiding clients through the Change Process.
